Eric Birchall obituary

My husband, Eric Birchall, who has died aged 80, spent much of his life working in adult education before switching to run a design business that allowed him to use the full range of his artistic talents.

Eric was born in Wigan to Doris (nee Martlew), who worked in a cotton mill, and her husband, Ernest Birchall, a lorry driver. At the age of five Eric was selling flowers and vegetables from a wheelbarrow. Five years later some local communists persuaded him to hand out leaflets in the street – until his parents found out.

House price growth at six-year low and inflation rises to 1.9%

UK could suffer first fall in prices since 2011 towards the end of this year

House prices grew at the slowest rate since 2013 in January, according to official figures that signalled the UK was heading later this year for the first fall in property values since the financial crash.

Average house prices in the UK increased by 1.7% in the year to January 2019, down from 2.2% in December 2018 and 5.1% in October 2017, the Office for National Statistics said.
