Who’s the Biggest Loser?

If you ask your estate agent why you haven’t yet sold your house, he’ll blame either your asking price (too high) or the market (too slow) or both.  So what’s his answer?  “Drop your price”.  This strategy, he assures you, will combat a sluggish market and bring previously hidden buyers out into the open.  He is persuasive, after all, there is no other answer.  It’s a sale at any cost.

But wait – it’s a sale at your cost! If you drop your asking price by £50,000 (and let’s remember – that’s more than twice the average annual wage in the UK) what is your estate agent going to lose in commission?  At 1.5% the company will lose only £750.  And what about the sales negotiator?  If they are on 3% of sales commission, which is about average, that’s only £22.50 to lose.

So, let’s get this straight: your sales negotiator is putting pressure on you to drop your asking price by £50,000 so you can sell, but his only stake is a loss of commission of £22.50.  Is that fair?!

Don’t be the biggest loser – do everything you can to protect that most precious of commodities – your asking price.  After all, if you don’t think your house is worth it, how can you expect your buyer to?

It is an ancient symbol that crosses cultures and religions – and it is now being used on anything from T-shirts to cushion covers. But its adoption by designers is nothing new

Once you start noticing the evil eye, you can’t stop seeing it. Or rather, it can’t stop seeing you. The eye, whose “pupil” often comes in cobalt blue and is occasionally adorned with eyelashes, has been a recurring motif in fashion over the years, from the necklace worn by Willow Smith for Chanel’s AW16 eyewear campaign, to Elie Saab’s eye-embellished dresses from the spring 2017 couture collection, to Gigi Hadid’s Eyelove and Eyelovemore shoe designs with Stuart Weitzman the same year. But, more recently, the trend has intensified.

Coach 1941’s 2019 Cruise collection put an evil eye on sweaters, while Nicole Miller’s most recent show included a scattering of eyes across jackets, dresses and skirts. When Asos launched its homeware collection, Supply, at the beginning of the month it contained an “eye see you” cushion cover, bedspread and bath mat, as well as an eye-shaped mirror. Topshop is selling evil eye ankle socks and the symbol can be seen on sold out T-shirts from Urban Outfitters and on sweatshirts, bags and shoes at Kenzo.

The home jungle: how to live happily with the 5,000 other species in your house

Biologist Rob Dunn is the David Attenborough of the domestic sphere, uncovering everything from microbes in the shower to spiders in the basement. He goes on safari in the satisfyingly dusty corners of one Copenhagen home

The good news is that I will never be home alone again. The bad news – well, it’s not in fact bad news, but it is slightly unsettling – is that I share my home with at least 5,000 other species: wasps, flies, spiders, silverfish and an exotic bunch of wild bacteria.

All that information is apparently contained in a patch of grey dust I have just swabbed with my right index finger from a door frame in my living room. It’s like a DNA test of my house, says Rob Dunn, a 43-year-old American biologist who has come to my house in Copenhagen to hunt microbial life. He carries no lab gear and his blue crewneck jumper and striped Oxford shirt are hardly the combat suit of an exterminator. But with every discovery we make, with every spider we find lurking in the corner or each swab of dust, he displays an almost childlike sense of excitement. He swears and smiles, even whoops with delight: “This dust sample contains bacteria, your body microbes, your wife’s body microbes, your child’s body microbes. If you smoke weed we would find marijuana DNA in there. Everything is visible, but it’s also present in every breath. Every time you inhale, you inhale that story of your home.”
