International garden photographer of the year – in pictures
The international garden photographer of the year competition specialises in garden, plant, flower and botanical photography. It is run in association with the Royal Botanic Gardens, Kew, where entries are on display until 10 March. The competition is open to everyone, anywhere in the world. Images do not have to be taken in a specified year. There is no distinction drawn between professional and amateur photographers. There are 11 main categories to enter and numerous special awards. Here are nine of the first-placed entries in their categories, described in the photographers’ own words.

Nearly a million more young adults now live with parents – study
Number has risen from 2.4 million to 3.4 million in 20 years, report says
Nearly a million more young adults are living with their parents than was the case two decades ago, a study has found.
The figures, in a report by the cross-party thinktank Civitas, will fuel concerns that too little is being done to protect young people from Britain’s housing crisis.

UK house prices fall in January as Brexit puts off buyers
Biggest monthly drop since April comes while annual growth slows to 0.8% – Halifax
House prices in the UK fell 2.9% in January from December and the annual growth rate slowed sharply as Brexit fears put off buyers, according to Halifax, one of Britain’s biggest mortgage lenders.
Halifax said the monthly drop took the average house price down to £223,691 and came after a 2.5% rise in December. It is the biggest monthly drop since last April, when prices declined 3.1%. Analysts cautioned that the monthly house price changes tend to be volatile.
