Charles Church claims its homes are of ‘unrivalled design and quality’ – but some buyers feel badly let down
When Victoria Baker and her husband opened the door to their brand new £380,000 five bedroom home in Ingleby Barwick, near Stockton, they were thrilled to finally move into what they thought would be their perfect home.
Instead they say they were confronted by a catalogue of issues that has left them stressed and put a strain on their marriage. “It’s been horrific,” admits Baker, 36, who moved into their Charles Church home with Gavin, 35, and their two children in June.

Bovis Homes: some buyers say their problems continue
Poor quality prompted owners to list issues from leaks to creaking floors. For some the saga goes on
Nearly two years after a scandal over poorly-built houses tarnished Bovis Homes’ reputation and prompted a profit warning, the housebuilder says it has turned the corner – but some buyers say they are still battling to have their homes put right.
Almost 4,000 people joined a Facebook group last year which listed problems from leaks and drainage issues to bent walls and creaking floors. That group subsequently shut down, but a new one now has more than 400 members.

Let’s move to Portobello, Edinburgh: ‘It has a Rio-like promenade’
Sand, sea ... shame about the climate
What’s going for it? I always forget Edinburgh has a seaside. This would make the city perfect (all the best cities have a seaside), were it not for the distinctly un-Rio-like climate. Instead it’s almost perfect. For, although Portobello lacks Copacabana and 30C year-round heat, it does have sandy beaches and a Rio-like promenade peopled with joggers and lovers arm-in-arm, rollerbladers and scooter kids fronting a sweeping landscape of knobbly hills and a sea of blue (on a good day). But who needs balmy seas when you have a newly restored Victorian Turkish baths to poach in? Who needs the work of Oscar Niemeyer when there are beautiful 19th-century stone villas? Who needs The Girl From Ipanema and an ice-cold caipirinha when you can meet the girl from St Andrews chippy over a bag of scraps and whisk her off for a sundowner pint at The Espy on the seafront?
The case against It’s rather cut off from the rest of the city, with the railway viaducts and the roaring Sir Harry Lauder Road. It feels as if it needs just a little more love (and money).
