6 November 1918 Police claim that magistrates will not punish boys for raiding orchards and gardens

As I walked across the meadow and down the woodside this morning in the still, mild air, with a thrush singing though with a dull sky above, it was easy to forecast the lovely day which was to follow. It came to my memory that it was the anniversary of the victory of Inkerman, when in the Crimea, as in old England, snow fell heavily. We have still in the garden one tree with its scarlet orange leaves a perfect glory of colour – the Japanese cherry. A few trees, and bushes and the thorn hedges are still full of leaves, and it is seldom in this district that the landscape is so beautiful in November.

An amazing variety of plant pictures are posted online

I am forever reading how Instagram is a bad thing for UK horticulture, especially from people who work in the industry. The highly staged photos, the impractical ideas, the shameless doctoring with filters: we’re told these all conspire to give newbie gardeners a distorted view of horticultural reality, setting them up for failure. While in many cases these may be fair criticisms, on balance I feel that the enormous benefits of the ’gram in exposing us to new, international ideas far outweigh the negatives.

The British gardening media generally lives in a place of sunlit nostalgia. Instagram changes all that
